A Ventura County sheriff's deputy said the agent, whose identity was not released, was wounded when his gun accidentally discharged while he was returning it to his holster Friday, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported. The bullet struck him in the hip, causing a wound that was described as not life-threatening. The division assigned to protect the wife of the late President Ronald Reagan had rented part of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department range in Camarillo for a routine training session. The session was not connected to events this weekend in honor of Reagan's 100th birthday at the presidential library in Simi Valley, the Ventura Star said.

The agent was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury to his hip. His name was not released. Nobody else was injured. The Ventura County Star reports the agent was assigned to the Reagan Protective Division of the Secret Service, which handles security for the former first lady. Aranda says the Secret Service is handling the investigation of the incident.
