A 12-year-old Gilbert girl trying to retrieve her bike helmet fell down an open dry well Monday night near Gilbert Greens Apartments complex in the 1100 block of N. Gilbert Road.

Paramedics arrived on scene at 6:15p.m. and were able to make contact with Angel Williams, who was alert and conscious. Firefighers put a 20-foot ladder into the well and she was able to climb out on her own.

The dry well, which was lined with small river rocks, was approximately 16 to 17 feet deep. A protective grate that usually covers the well had been previously removed by children, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Mike Connor said.

The girl sustained minor scrapes and bruises from the fall and was transported to Banner Gateway Hospital to be treated for a possible broken leg.
