Aurora police chaplain, officer hurt in squad car crash

An Aurora police chaplain was hurt while riding with an officer in a squad car that crashed Sunday night while responding to an emergency call.

Rev. Jerome Leake, 68, the department's senior chaplain, was being treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Aurora police said in press release. The officer was also taken to a hospital and was treated and released.

Leake was a passenger in the marked squad car that was driven by a 26-year-old Aurora officer who was responding to a call of a burglary in progress about 8:40 p.m. on Aurora's Near East Side, police said. The squad car's lights and siren were activated when the vehicle apparently hit a patch of ice, police added.

The officer lost control of the vehicle as he was driving east on Fifth Avenue at State Street. Police said the squad car left the roadway and hit and hit a tree in the parkway, on the vehicle's passenger side.

Leake had to be extricated by Aurora fire personnel.
